CHRIST THE KING
November 22, 2020: A Reflection for the Solemnity of Christ the King, Year A
Matthew 25:31-46
Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (Mt 25:35)
The Kingdom. You speak about it constantly in the Gospel, Jesus. Just what are you talking about? It is our inheritance, you say. Does that mean that we will possess it at a later date, say, when we die? Yet that doesn’t seem to be the case. You also say the Kingdom is within. So it is not a destination. What then, is it?
It is you. You, Jesus are the Kingdom and since you are the spark of Being in every particle of creation, the Kingdom is everywhere and exists as Presence. It is not a feeling but a recognition of your face in all that exists. Just as currency bears the stamp of the one to whom it belongs, so all creation bears the stamp, the spark of being, of the one to whom IT belongs. You.
And in your Kingdom you have identified yourself in the needs, the joys, the pain, the everyday living of us all. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your rule lasts from age to age. The rule of love, of truly caring.
Our inheritance begins now. It is a state of being, born of a living relationship with you and lived out in the gift of ourselves to one another, to the world. Help us to yield ourselves to your sovereignty, O Gentle King. You express your sovereignty in powerlessness, in washing the feet of your disciples, in caring for us in our needs as would a servant. You invite us to inherit your kingdom by living from the center of our being where the spark of the Divine creates us each moment and calls us forth to serve in The Kingdom
Jesus, on the day when we celebrate your kingship of a whole new way of looking at the world, help us to realize our unity with one another and the world in you. To love each other as you have loved us. Bless us, O Christ the king!
