December 10, 2022–3rd Sunday of Advent Candle Lighting

So far, we have spoken of fire coming down from the Bright Morning star to the earth and of our First Advent Candle holding that fire as light. Last week, our Second Advent Candle was symbolized by a meadow, open and receptive to the descent of life-giving rain, the mercy of God in the person of Jesus.

This week, you, O Third Candle of Advent, are a smile, you radiate joy–the exuberant joy of the Father as he dances his only Son into our midst. His Son Jesus, who renews us in his love, who exults for sheer gladness over his little ones and sings his heart out for joy. Who leaps into our midst with the eagerness of a lover who wants nothing else than to be with the beloved.

What, O Candle, what is it about us that so captivates his heart? Can it be that we are so loved by this God that a mighty smile wraps us round in mercy, enfolds us in a tender love that surpasses all understanding, and shouts with joy to be in our midst?

As the day of his human birth approaches, let the dancing joy of your flame call us forth to dance in his presence, in service, in charity, in peace. To be, like him, a smile, a welcoming hearth for all who seek the warmth and light of the Son of God.
